By Nick J. Hennessy

Learning to play the guitar can be achieved by almost anyone who wants to try it. It does however take dedication and persistence. Here are some things to remember when learning how to play the guitar.

1. Invest a little - Using the best instrument possible to learn how to play can be a big help in the learning process. As with most activities having the right equipment makes a world of difference in the final outcome, and also makes things much easier.

Because of this you should invest and buy a good guitar. It doesn't have to be the best, most expensive, or even new, but it should be one of good quality and in good condition. This is because a quality guitar will sound better and will be able to be tuned more easily. This will go far in your enjoyment of learning and playing this wonderful instrument.

2. Practice, practice, practice - If one saying fits learning how to play the guitar it is "Practice Makes Perfect". Although learning to play isn't technically that hard, it is a skill that requires constant and consistent practice. If there is a secret to becoming an exceptional guitar player in the shortest time possible, that is it.

When setting up your practice schedule remember that you will get more out of your practice sessions if you practice every day for at least 30 minutes. Dividing your practice sessions into frequent short time periods is much better than having longer but fewer sessions. The short sessions will keep you from getting bored, and practicing more often will help you build on the skills you practiced the last time without forgetting too much.

3. At first it will hurt - It's unfortunate, but learning how to play the guitar is painful until you build up calluses on your finger tips. The good thing is it doesn't take too long, especially if you follow the constant and consistent practice guidelines from tip 2. Once you do, playing will be painless. The important thing to remember is to push through the pain.

4. Different learning options - There are more choices than ever on the ways to learn how to play the guitar. The internet and streaming video make it easy for someone to "take lessons" right from their computer in the comfort of their home. While that works for some people other prefer the traditional method of learning from an instructor. You have to figure out the best way that works for you, and remember that one way may be better at one stage of you development and a different one might be better later on. Explore the different options and find one that is right for you at your present stage.

Hopefully you found these tips useful and they help you become the guitarist you want to be. The important thing is to start learning today and concentrate on improving a little each day.
