When a novice starts playing the guitar, the most important thing is to learn guitar scales. They literally open up the doors to playing the instrument. It helps in better understanding of the instrument and consequently more success. The ability of a player in playing the instrument depends heavily on it.



The definition of the word "scale" is a group of musical notes that are played one after another in an ascending or descending sequence. One can find various types of them, with style, patterns and qualities that totally differ. There is a whole number to study.

Practicing can be quite dull and definitely not an exciting way to spend time. However it is imperative that you focus on practicing them. Constant practice helps to gain an in-depth knowledge and helps in enhancing the coordination and finesse of playing. The most important thing is to find a quiet place, where the possibility of being disturbed or interrupted is very low. The practice should last not less than half an hour or up to the time, when there is no pause between playing one note after another.

After gaining enough confidence in the basics, one should try to mix things up slightly. One can set his own challenges and goals and try to achieve them. For example, the notes could be tried in descending order or in groups in some pre-determined order. It can be varied slightly in case it gets too boring though.

Thus, in order to achieve skill, dexterity and strength, one should learn guitar scales. Besides, it also helps in proper solo organization and can lead to the creation of memorable performances.
