The iconic name REO Speedwagon was actually based on a model truck that was produced way back in 1915. When this group were brainstorming for their definitive band name, Doughty came across this name written on the blackboard of a History Class. With their appellation all set and decided, they then went on to perform covers in their campus, in such locales as fraternity parties, university events, and bars.

The members at during this time at 1967 was composed of Doughty on Keyboards, Alan Gratzer on percussion, Joe Matt on lead guitar, and Mike Blair on bass. At about 1968, some members quit but they were almost immediately replaced by Terry Luttrel, Bob Crownover, Gregg Philbin, Joe McCabe, and Marty Shepherd. Respectively, these were vocalists, guitarists, bassists, saxophonists, and trumpeters. Along the course of its long history, it included about twenty two members at different points of time.
