Music, Theater And Other Performance Space Austin

By Karen Murray

As most performers know, it can often be hard to find a place to present a dance performance, play music or put on a play. It can often be even harder to find available performance space Austin. For, the capitol city has gone through a great deal of redevelopment over the last several decades. As a result, several historic venues have been lost in the process.

One reason it is so difficult to locate a venue at which to host an event or perform is due to the ongoing redevelopment the city has been seeing now for decades. For, a number of historic venues which had presented comedy, music, poetry and theater have all been torn down to make way for multi-million dollar condominiums and high dollar shopping districts. As such, those having performed in the past often have a much more difficult time locating places at which to perform in the present.

Fortunately, there are also still a few spaces which offer world class entertainment and provide a venue for larger touring acts. In fact, some of the best performance halls and theaters still grace the capitol city entertainment scene. While some are smaller more intimate spaces, others can hold thousands of audience members.

Venues which are still open and operating include Austin City Limits Live, a live music venue featuring well known and up and coming musicians. In addition to concerts, the venue hosts one of the best art galleries in the city on the second floor. The gallery features artists of all genres spanning a number of years.

The Long Center is another popular venue among community members as it is very convenient to a number of freeways. The center offers a number of plays, musicals and concerts throughout the year. As the center is home to a number of local arts organizations including the Lyric Opera, Ballet Austin and the Austin Symphony orchestra.

Another well known venue, due its location on the University of Texas Austin campus is that of Bass Hall. The hall features a number special concerts, events, student productions, and plays put on by the film and theater department as well as other productions. As might be expected, it is a favorite venue among community members, professors, staff and students.

While Sky Candy is small, intimate and clean, it lacks air conditioning. As a result, most classes, events and shows at this small space occur during Fall and Winter months. Although, the aerial classes offered throughout the year are often a hit, especially with those involved in the local movement scene. Individuals can also rent the space for personal productions or other events when the space is available.

One of the premiere performance spaces in and around the city is that of the Zachary Scott Theater. Zachary Scott is a community theater which has been in existence for quite some time. Due to the popularity of the theater, individuals can now purchase single or season tickets. For, the theater tends to have at least one production during each season of the year.
