If you have a passion for music, and want to have a career that includes it, you should prepare for a long, difficult road. Playing in a band is not the only option you have. You might have a great career behind the scenes as a concert promoter for instance. To make a success of this job, there are a number of skill sets you will have to develop. You have to become proficient at managing, marketing, logistics, and communicating. You will also have to become a media savvy entrepreneur.

A college degree is not required for this profession, although there are many college graduates in it. The one thing you can not do without, according to the experts, is the ability to write well. Natural writers are rare. This means you will probably need to enroll in English classes emphasizing sentence structure, vocabulary, and grammar. You must learn the art of writing press releases and compelling copy.

There are other skills you must master before anyone will consider you for a job promoting concerts. You could start a blog that addresses the club and music scene in the city in which you are attending college. You have to learn how to photograph bands in clubs and how best to manipulate the pictures to enhance the quality, making them something people will notice. These pictures can be posted on social media.

Most successful promoters agree that anyone interested in the business has to first become a performer. You could learn to be a DJ or take guitar lessons. Whatever you decide to do, you need to stick with it so you will understand the performers you are booking and what is takes to put on a show. You need to know how best to set up a band's gear and how to break it down.

When you start applying for a job in the field, you must be able to present a relevant resume. Managers will be looking for writing samples like blogs. These will be invaluable to them when deciding on the best candidates at the entry level. Successful applicants will know how to create spreadsheets and edit graphics.

You must be detailed oriented to succeed in this business. You need to decide what area of the business most interests you. Some promoters excel at throwing parties while others specialize in celebrity club bookings.

The most successful promoters made it a point to attend shows in all kinds of genres. They went to jazz clubs and operas. They also attended electronic dance music festivals and rock concerts. They watched what promoters did between sets, the fencing and security setups, and even the number of drinks the bartender poured during the night.

Along the way you will become adept at a number of skills. You will learn the art of marketing and how to manage the volunteer groups that are so essential to big events. If you have a passion for music, and a talent for sensing trends in the music industry, you might have a chance at a great career.
