The Best Country Music

By Todd Alan

Country music has conquered the airwaves since its inception in the 1920's in the Southern and Western parts of the US. The country idiom has an easy musical folk-type style and often uses string instruments (e.g. Guitar) as accompaniment. The genre has a diversified list of categories that include gospel, alternative, Western swing and country rock. Artists like Elvis Presley, Kenny Rogers, Dolly Parton and many more, have laid the groundwork for this kind of music to be recognized all over the globe. The list of the best country songs is a rather long one. But if you are relatively new to this idiom and you want to explore it further, there is not any reason why you should not start by listening to the following songs.

I will always love you

Written and originally performed by Dolly Parton (to the dismay of die-hard Whitney fans, unfortunately), "I will always love you" is thought to be one of the best country love songs in history. The melancholy and the sincere, naked emotion that the song shows to its listeners, is the reason why even up to this point, listening to "I will always love you" does not get tiring.

It was released by Parton back in 1974 and the tune follows her successful single "Jolene." It was received very well by listeners and critics from across America and even in Canada, landing it the number one spot in both the US Country and Canadian Country Charts at the time. The song proved to be highly marketable and "universal," because Whitney Houston had similar success when she revived it in 1992 as one of the musical scores in the film "The Bodyguard." It sold a total of amounting to six hundred thousand copies in a single week, a noteworthy and unsurpassed achievement up to this time.

Sparks fly

Written and sung by the country music sensation Taylor Swift, Sparks fly is a new single from Swift's latterly released album, Speak Now. The tune has all of the qualities people have come to love about Swift's songwriting - odes to youthful obsession, catchy tunes, charming imagery and depictions, and tell-it-in-your-face emotions.

In this song/story, the girl protagonist falls for a handsome young man although she knows it's a "bad idea." And even with that though in mind she "sees sparks fly whenever he smiles." The lyric of the track has engaging lines and it's able to supply the obligatory colors to make the Swift's rendition as real-world as real-life quality can get.
