PRS SE Guitars And You

By Rochelle Hardin

PRS SE Guitars are not manufactured in America at PRS Guitars in Maryland as the other series are. The SE version of these are called Student Edition Series. The first three letters stand for Paul Reed Smith named so because the founder was Luthier Paul Reed Smith a great guitarist himself.

The end of the 90's are when these cost effective Student Editions came on the markets and were made in Korea instead of America as the other models are. The tones and wood they were crafted with were much more lower quality than the high end ones in the United States and the tuners had no locking mechanisms.

One Student Edition called the Soapbar Two did have exquisite veneers in maple. Popularity of these models has highly increased over the last few years with people who play as hobby or just for fun. Professional guitarists still prefer higher quality PRS models instead.

Now for guitarists who thrash the strings playing the heaviest metal music and the hardest rock versions the higher quality and most expensive of all the SE types Torreo is what is preferred and most ask for. These do not resemble the other models at all the only thing that is familiar would be the not locking tuners on them. These even higher priced were made in the Korean plant not America.

The most popular body finishes of the original series include mahogany made body and tops of maple when finished. More extravagant special models are available and made with the addition of maple flames or fancy maple which is quilted and figured in the designs of tiger stripes.

Mahogany is mostly used to craft the necks but some are crafted with rosewood from Brazil or India. This type of wood also makes up the fingerboards on these models too. The main signature of these PRS SE Guitars and their other models are the neck fret type markers which are added to both the high end as swooping birds of ten different varieties whereas the low ends have moon shapes of a more crescent shape.
