Are You Willing To Know How To Write Song?

By Alex Colin

Do you aspire to be a singer, musician or a song writer? Do you need to know how to write songs? Here are a few tips to give you a head start.

Just writing a simple song is very easy. Writing a good, beautiful song, however, is difficult. Songs are poems that you can sing and set to a particular tune. You can generally write good songs if you're good at poetry. If you are talented, well and good; talent alone wouldn't make you a professional songwriter. If you want to become great, you need to study the greats, learn how they approached their music.

The first and foremost thing to do is to listen to songs. Listen to what are considered popular songs, especially those that have stood the test of time. Go over the lyrics. Observe what is it that made it so popular. Once you're done, also study the ones that totally failed and find out why they failed. Compare the successful ones to the failures. Create a list of the differences.

You need to be a good listener in order to be a good songwriter. When you're listening to music, be active and take mental notes about the things that you like.

Although a degree in music theory is not a prerequisite, having an understanding of the technical aspects is a must. You need to understand rhythm, harmony, counterpoint etc. Study the chords and understand how they are used to proper effect.

You may need some professional help to push you to the next level once you have a bit of basic understanding of music. Inspiration cannot be called upon at will, inspiration can touch you any time. Being a songwriter, it'll help if you observe the surroundings, keep your mind and senses open to new experiences and let your feelings lose. If an idea clicks, it could be a big chartbuster!

Set your song to an appropriate mood after you've selected the theme. Your understanding of music will help you select the proper tune. Ideas start flowing once you get started on any song. Have a pen and paper handy as you can make notes from the ideas that come to you and then later string them together to complete a beautiful song. After creating a draft, polish and refine what you've ever created.
