Disco Dancing

By Ram Collins

Disco has been around and had its peak a long time ago. Today, it seemed to have died down. But certain aspects of the dance had been shared in today's styles of dance and sounds.

What Is Disco?

Disco was popular during the 70's which were also the time of rock music. To simply put it, disco was like way to counter rock music back then. It was the black gay community that embraced disco then the white gay community in New York followed. The last groups to take it were the women and Latinos.

Disco Sounds

Disco is actually influenced by a lot of different music, which would originally include soul and funk music. Usually, music that has a "four-on-the-floor" steady beat with an eighth note or sixteenth note pattern with soaring vocals, electric bass lines that are syncopated but prominent, and an off-beat open hi-hat, are the music that are associated with Disco. You might even notice that certain disco tracks have other instruments in the background as well, such as strings, electronic pianos, horns and electric guitars, to add a few more lush sounds to the music. These make the music very easy to dance to.

Disco Dancing Basics

Dancing disco is fairly simple and does not require any real training. There are no rules to begin with but that does not mean the dance has no direction. Disco dancing has simply requires a certain pattern to your movement. The most basic is moving from left to right and putting your feet together after every move. Keep in mind to stay with the beat of the music or look silly in the simplest form of dancing.

Advance Disco Dancing

Repeating the same dance pattern can be boring even for a disco dance, the best thing to do is to accompany it with hand gestures and some spins.

Aside from that, you could also add a couple of hand gestures and hand movements along with your dance pattern. Just make sure that you do it along with the beat in order to avoid looking foolish.

What You Should Wear

There is no strict requirement with the type of clothing you wear as long as you are comfortable with it. You should be able to move around no matter what dance patterns you will perform.
