Allen Organs Are Top Of The Line

By Slanikan Kolahata

Today Allen Organs is the largest builder of classical organs in the entire world. Who would have thought that from such humble beginnings the industry would grow into what it is today. A young man by the name of Jerome Mankowitz was considered by many to be a brain child when it came to building new things. His fascination with the organ began while he was attending college and the rest is history.

The family relocated to Allentown, Pennsylvania and Mr. Mankowitz worked tirelessly to create his own instrument. It was not long before the family basement proved to be too small and operations were moved to his fathers mill. It was at the mill where Jerome met and befriended Norman Koons. Mr. Koons had much of the mechanical ability that Jerome was in need of. Months of arduous effort produced the first organ that was ever sold. With this success Allen Organs, named after the city they lived in, was formed.

The war and postwar years proved to be a difficult time for the fledgling company. Just as more and more of the organs were beginning to sell, workers had to be let go due to the dire economy. Despite all obstacles the Allen Company never lost sight of its pledge to manufacture the best organ that man had ever known.

Introduction to the world came about during the 1960's while the company was achieving its largest growth period. From one man's idea, a small but determined group survived to become the largest manufacturer of these marvelous instruments. From the greatest of cathedrals to the smallest of churches, an organ can be produced to fit every need.

Today there are a large number of models from which to choose. Each of them can be designed based on the specific wants and needs of the buyer. For small areas there is the Chapel style. Affordable, while losing nothing in style and sound, is the Protege. The design of the Heritage was established using the many requests of the customers and its flexibility is well known. The latest innovation is the Quantum digital organ.

The striking tones afforded by these instruments, will leave the listener in awe. Combine that with the beautiful woods used, and you have an instrument that cannot be replicated anywhere in the world. Now run by the founder's son, this company holds its initial goals first and foremost. To produce a product that that endure with lasting quality and beauty.
