A Guide to the Most Popular UK Music Festivals

By Johnny Dante

One of the most exciting things about British summer is the annual music festivals that take place around the country. The UK offers a range of different festivals that boast some of the most famous pop artists in the world, along with fun activities for friends and family. From the infamous Glastonbury to the intimate Bestival, there are festivals to suit all eclectic tastes.

Glastonbury - The Glastonbury Festival is the largest festival in the UK and is famous all over the world for it's variety of entertainment and world class lineups. With around ten different music stages there is always something to suit everyone from dance music to world music, and pop music to rock music. It can all be found within the Glastonbury fields in rural Somerset. The headline acts are usually the best current bands or artists and have featured the likes of Bruce Springsteen, Jay Z, Coldplay and now U2. Glastonbury is also famous for the mud; but hey, isn't that part of the fun?!

The Big Chill - The Big Chill festival is situated in the Malvern Hills is Herefordshire and the setting is absolutley stunning. It aims to be exactly what it says on the tin and be a nice relaxed festival for everyone. The lineup is weighted more towards the dance genre with lots of Dj's and chill out acts. However, there is usually also a mixture of bands so there is usually a fairly good variety in the music. Party goers can keep going through to the small hours with plenty of music tents staying open nice and late!

Isle of Wight Festival - Perhaps most famous for Jimi Hendrix's performance in 1970, this festival is steeped in history and has seen some legendary performances over the years. Sadly the 1970 weekend was to be it's last festival until it made a successful return in 2002. The Isle of Wight festival has since regained it's place on the festival map and bands such as Muse, REM and Coldplay have made it one of the must attend music events of the year.

Reading and Leeds Festivals - The twin festivals share a lineup with one site in the south of England (Reading) and the other up north (Leeds). The bands rotate around and every act is contracted to play both events, so by going to one and not the other you will not miss seeing any band. The lineup is always world class, and is focused towards the more rockier end of the spectrum. Tickets sell out extremely quickly, so if you want to attend then you have to act fast and get a ticket as soon as they go on sale.

V Festival - This two day festival takes place in Chelmsford and Staffordshire and features some of the best pop acts in the country. The artists that perform on the Saturday swap venues on Sunday so both the South East and the North Midlands festival goers get to see their favourite acts. The V Festival has boasted the likes of Lily Allen, Fatboy Slim and Paolo Nutini.

As the list above demonstrates, there is plenty of choice when it comes to UK music festivals. There really is something for everyone. If you're not sure which one to chose, simply buy some music magazines and check out who's playing and where.
