Detroit Rocks, Literally

Since their invention, automobiles have become an integral to the society and culture of the United States. Cars have been the inspiration for movies, TV's shows, video games, books and comics, and even music. Here are some. If you need a good used car come to used car dealers in Delaware for an amazing deal.

Don McLean's "American Pie" - It is nearly impossible to define the influence and popularity of this song. Written in 1971 about the deaths of Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and the Big Bopper, and later expanded to include other artist, this song has really come to represent good old fashioned America and the early, glory days of rock and roll. Specifically the line, "I drove my Chevy to levy, but the levy was dry," sealed Chevy's already growing place as an American icon. The song was number 1 for 4 weeks on the Billboard charts. It also gave us the phrase "the day the music died," and inspired the song Grammy winning song, "Killing Me Softly," sung by Roberta Flack. It is considered one of the most important songs in American music.

In 1984 Bruce Springsteen released, "Pink Cadillac," on the B side of "Dancing in the Dark." This song did not become famous until 1988 when Natalie Cole covered it. It is most famous for its line "I just wonder what you do there in the back of you pink Cadillac." Despite what some may think, it was not a tribute to Mary Kay cosmetics.

Backtracking one year we go to Prince's song about a girl and another Chevy. "Little Red Corvette," aired in 1983 on Prince's album 1999. It was his first song to reach the top ten Billboard Hot 100 singles chart and peaked at 6. It was also his first song to perform better on the pop charts then the R&B charts, this largely due to the rock/pop music in the chorus. Fortunately most people don't realize the song is a euphemism for a one night stand, which means Chevy can still claim it as a marketing source.

Lastly, don't forget the Beatles very famous, "Drive My Car." The song was released on 1965 on the album Rubber Soul. The song tells the story of a man who meets a woman who claims she will be a famous movie start and she offers him the chance to be her chauffeur. When he finally agrees to it, she then admits that she does not have a car. Paul McCartney admitted later that this song posed some of the more difficult lyrics for him and John Lennon to write. He also later admitted that much like Prince's "Little Red Corvette," the phrase "Drive My Car" was another sexual reference.
