Phonographic Memories

By Hazel L. Lloyd

I can still remember some very cherished experiences of my early years and music has something to do with it.I observed while my mama and papa moved to the music barefoot on the family room floor to such music created by Glenn Miller, Guy Lombardo, Sinatra, and other timeless tunes. My parents could jiggerbug like no one I have ever seen. Every Saturday night, my parents organized parties inside the house and the music would continue even after I had tucked myself in bed. As I laid on the bed, the music and the chortling of visitors below were what I listened to. Drifting off to dreamland that way was very enjoyable. It made me happy especially when they permit to hang around even when its late since I got to witness them swing, and furthermore when my papa picked me up in his arms to move to the music with him too. I will never stop thinking of those lovely times and they are forever cherished in my heart. Having my own phonograph was what my father and mother desired for me and they provided me with one as I got older. Elvis Presley, Doris Day, the Beatles, their music was everything that I listened on the phonograph and most especially Motown, my favorite. Kudos to you Mr. Edison, for your gadget that endowed us with hours of satisfaction and entertainment.

It all began in 1877 in October during the time Mr. Thomas Alva Edison taped the nursery rhyme phrase, "Mary had a little lamb," and launched man into the world of documented sounds. It was a big blow however that Mr. Edison's creation was incapable of maintaining the people's fascination in the long run. From the formulation to making an example, to holding an exhibition at the New York's Scientific American, the Edison Speaking Phonograph Company was then created in 1878. Fabrication of the record playing device started, and several were marketed turning the phonograph an immediate hit. The fascination of the populace on the other hand wore off after all of it. After the phonograph's downfall, Edison toiled on inventing the incandescent bulb instead.

Maybe, Edison felt challenged the day Alexander Graham Bell, accompanied by his cousin Chichester A. Bell and a scientist and instrument builder named Charles Sumner Tainter requested for a patent on his instrument in 1886, on the 4th day of May. Thus, it made Edison act on improving his machine.Bell and Tainter spoke to Edison for a probable partnership, however Edison would not hear of it ( joking aside), declined and generated an advanced, more superior version of the gadget itself. For his enhanced creation to sell in the market, Edison established the Edison Phonograph Company by October 8, 1887.The rest, they say, is history.

The phonograph continued its evolution, and instead of cylinders utilized for documenting sound, the creation of the record, LP's launched a wholly distinctive world. The new version made finer sounds and the play time was extensive and had fewer intermissions.

Nowadays, if you still own records that you like to play, phonograph turntables are still obtainable in the market.I still keep my old Elvis records, several of my father and mother's favorite records and they still sound fantastic. Some of the latest phonographs have radios, cassette players and recorders incorporated, therefore you enjoy the best of all worlds. You can also get extra or substitute needles for them.

It is always a mystery to me once the needle comes in contact with the record, it just brings me back to my younger years, when all was jovial dancing and being entertained. It was such a happy reminiscence.
