Looking At Ways Of Writing Lyrics For Longevity

By Chris Borg

Music feeds the soul, some say. It is enjoyable to make the beat of a song, even without writing lyrics, and is often used by paint and sculpture artists to help create the mood they need in order to create beautiful pieces. Sounds made by ancient folks were used for enjoyment as well as communication.

Throughout the jungle in ancient times, primeval sounds could be heard. Primates used sticks, rocks or whatever else they lay hands upon, to bang on trees and rocks. They may have done this to show how happy they were but also as a method of deterring perceived enemies. Human beings added meaning to the rhythms.

Music lends itself well to telling stories from poems. It is often done the other way around as well, adding words to written music. Either way, your ability to convey your feelings with music, lyrics or not, is something that comes from the heart. Upbeat, soulful or romantic tunes fill the ears of those who really listen.

There are a lot of people who cannot write music, but just because you might not be able to tell the difference between notes, does not mean you can't still write a song. Poetry is the foundation of the lyrical process, so if you want to write a song, perhaps it would be easier to consider it poetry. You can add music later if you wish, or you can have someone else do that part.

Writers of songs can come up with the most awesome stories to tell. Many use their own lives as inspiration. When that is not possible, there are methods of revelation other than your own feelings. Looking around you and jotting down what you see, browsing through magazines and books, and watching people interact with one another can often lead to a chain reaction of words of expression.

Good song writers do not have to write words that make sense or even rhyme, but they just need to keep writing. The outcome may be a hit song. Even funny songs tell stories, and are full of enjoyment and mirth. Something that happens in your life or is told to you, could end up being a song that helps someone through a bad time. A foot-stomping ditty could also make people happy when they are feeling low.

Music artists are effective when they can bring enjoyment to others. Over the air waves, music travels to televisions and radios across the country, bringing people music to suit their mood. Both sides of this coin are necessary: those who enjoy writing lyrics and those who enjoy the resulting creation. This symbiotic relationship has been essential for music to endure as log as it has.
