Chicago's Pitchfork Music Festival

By Jason Jacobs

The yearly Pitchfork Indie Music Festival in Chicago, IL is the mecca of music festivals for those who listen to the kind of "hipster" music that music blogs tend to go crazy over.

In this article you will find a paragraph about each of five of the best bands who can be heard at the 2011 festival.

Animal Collective might just be Pitchfork's favorite band (at least after their lukewarm review of Radiohead's most recent album.) Personally I'm of a few different opinions when it comes to this band. While I really respect that they create music that really challenges me, I don't necessarily always enjoy listening to it. That said; I have had some unique experiences listening to Animal Collective and I would like to see them play live (I have not yet.)

Fleet Foxes make serene music that puts a slightly modern twist on the late '60s sounds of Crosby, Stills, & Nash and Simon & Garfunkel. If you love acoustic guitar playing, meaningful lyrics, and sweet harmonies then you should definitely give Fleet Foxes a chance.

Guided By Voices have sixteen studio albums to their name. 1994's Bee Thousand and 1995's Alien Lanes are thought by many GBV fanatics to be their best work so I would start there if you are new to the band.

Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti is one of the strangest bands I've ever listened to. I am not really all that sure I like their music that much but I do find them quite interesting and I do love their song "Round and Round." Their thing seems to be doing strange reincarnations of cheesy 1980s era pop.

Battles makes very intense rhythmic music. You are quite unlikely to hear yourself singing a Battles song in the shower. This is the kind of music that I can enjoy a lot if I'm in the right mood for it but that I find pretty annoying most of the rest of the time.
