Details About The Best Selling Albums Of All Time

By Jack Wogan

Music is one of the industries which makes billions every year. People worldwide appreciate international stars and the local ones, because they are highly promoted through the media. Although we don't show the same interest towards artists form other domains, we enjoy music in all its forms. That is why, with the development of the internet bands and singers find it easier to measure their popularity by the number of visualizations they get from their fans, and they measure their success in the number of albums sold.

Even those people with a vast musical knowledge would find it difficult to draw a list of the best selling albums in the world. One reason is that before the 1980's few records are kept. The other is that many countries promote artists on subjective considerations. But one of the biggest problems is that, however illegal it may be, selling fake copies of albums is a common practice. Nevertheless, the data we can gather are enough to turn into a rather accurate image of the musical market in the last years, at least.

Michael Jackson's Album "Thriller" is the incontestable leader, being a real phenomenon in its time, both by the new type of music it proposed and by the catchy lyrics. With 110 million sales this album was first released in 1982 encouraged by the success of the single "Billie Jean". When it reached its peak sales the album was weekly bought by one million persons. It also enjoyed being promoted by music videos which was new at that time.

With few chances of equaling this record in sales the albums AC/DC "Back in Black", Pink Floyd "The dark side of the moon", Mat Loaf "Bat out of Hell", Eagles "Their Greatest Hits (1971-1975)", Backstreet Boys "Millennium", Fleetwood Mac "Rumours" and Shania Twain "Come on Over", knew a wide popularity being all sold in more than 40 million copies. If we were to count soundtracks here we should also mention "The Bodyguard", "Dirty Dancing" and "Saturday Night Fever". All these albums have been appreciated for their music which sounds great being supported by good instruments with effects pedals and smart promoting.

For an overview on the musical world it is just as appropriate to see which artists have registered the biggest sales ever. In this list The Beatles have a privileged spot based on the new sound they brought into music and on the impact they had on their contemporaries. Elvis Presley comes second in this top, but enjoys a best selling solo artist of all times position, with 198.1 million certified sales and 1 billion claimed sales. Of course, the phenomenon which was Michael Jackson is present here, too, on the third place, followed by ABBA, Madonna, Led Zeppelin and Queen are next, all having around 300 million records.
