Folk Music Produces Great Live Acts

By Karen Jones

Music with soul moves people and when people venture out to see live music, they want to be moved. Folk music comes from the soul, it is the music of poor working class people who sang to describe stories of their people and traditions and who entertained each other through a love of music and song. They sang from the heart and nothing is louder than the heart in music.

It is very rare that you will go to a folk music gig and not see the audience really engaged. Most people are singing along and dancing. This is the case regardless of the genre of folk being played.

One of the reasons that folk music is so engaging is the wide variety of instruments used. The melodies produced are rich and complicated giving folk music, especially live performances of it, a really unique feel. This is also part of the reason it appeals to such a wide range of ages and classes of people.

Most of the time folk music is performed at festivals or at small venues. A lot of the time there is no stage with the band playing in amongst the audience giving the whole experience a uniquely intimate feel. A lot of these small venues are pubs, so it is possible to enjoy a drink whilst listening to your favourite folk band.

Many a folk band in the UK offers even more than song and instruments when they perform. It is not unusual for bands to tour and perform with a dance troupe, merging traditional folk steps with modern contemporary dance styles.

This is the beauty of folk, especially when it is live. It is appealing to so many different ages and backgrounds and brings people together to have a wonderful time.
