Pink Floyd's Discovery Studio Album Box Set

By Jacob Smith

Pink Floyd's remastered "Discovery" CD box set is likely to be the biggest selling popular music box set release since The Beatles remastered box sets in 2009.

This box set contains 16 total CDs. That is all 14 Pink Floyd studio albums from 1967 through 1994. It is 16 discs instead of 14 because two of their studio albums were double albums (Ummagumma and The Wall.)

While many Floyd fans already have all 14 of their albums, what makes this box set compelling is that it contains newly remastered versions of each of these albums. They were remastered by a very respected producer by the name James Guthrie. In 1979 he co-produced The Wall.

For Pink Floyd fans who are not yet familiar with the band's entire back catalog this new remastered set is an amazing way to discover it (hence the name.) Is there a better way to listen to Pink Floyd's fantastic music for the first time than with great remastered sound? I would definitely recommend listening to these great albums in chronological order so you can hear Pink Floyd's unbelievable journey from their beginnings with the original lead singer, songwriter, and guitarist Syd Barrett to the post Roger Waters era in the '80s and '90s.

And of course there are those who know their very popular albums like The Wall like the back of their hand but who have never fully delved into their other albums. I am personally a huge fan of The Piper at the Gates of Dawn, Animals, and Meddle. I actually enjoy all three of those albums more than The Wall, despite its massive popularity

In addition to the Discovery Studio Album Box Set, there are also three "Immersion" box sets coming out; one box set for each of their three most popular albums; 1973's The Dark Side of the Moon, 1975's Wish You Were Here, and 1979's The Wall. Each of these box sets contains from 5 to 7 discs focused on just that one album! That may seem like a bit too much to some casual fans, but these are truly remarkable albums and really do deserve that intense level of "immersion."

The Pink Floyd: Oh By The Way CD Box Set is the "old way" of buying all of this legendary band's albums in one go. It includes the previous versions of their studio albums.
